Psychological attributes of Chakras

Muladhara

Represented by the Yantra of the earth element which is rectangle representing the stability, balance, staticity. Inside the rectangle there is a triangle with a lingam which has a boundary that is ill-defined and there is serpent coiled around the lingam, which represents the three guna and ego aspect of energy covering the consciousness of jiva. It is ill-defined because it is covered/veiled by the mayik (illusory; Mayarupa) aspect energy of Shakti. This truly represents our conditioned being or nature which responds to the instinctive levels of life activity. But both possibilities are present in the chakra; the Brahma granthi present in the chakra represent our limitations and conditionings with the most basic issues of life and when one’s energy is imbalanced at this level can cause extreme degree of pathology. Because this centre deals with the issues of survival and security; any imbalance at this level can result in the paranoid tendencies, unknown fear can direct itself for any specific objects or events in the environment. The person may cut the feeling of the body (not grounded in the body). The depletion of the energies of the earth element can manifest in the form of flighty, jumpy, oscillating, spacing out tendencies of the behavior. This is the center of the most fundamental fear; i.e. the fear of survival. Therefore it also governs the various facets of our behavioral expressions. Restrictiveness, fixity or the lack of flexibility in our nature is also because of the qualities of the earth element. The issues mainly deals with the issue of self preservation and when it is rajasika can manifests in the form of selfishness or lack of empathy and compassion but when it is in sattvika state it develops the quality of self reflection or self awareness. And the same energy of the tattva when handled properly; once tattva is purified it develops the quality of trust, security (when you are secured you can trust someone) grounding and stability in the personality. Grounding is one such quality associated with this chakra. It is the state of synchronicity with vibes/frequencies of the universe or immediate contact with the reality. When awareness is grounded properly it can heighten the self awareness or awareness of the body but when the energy is depressed can preoccupy the mind with body and then coping with the reality will be difficult.

Swadhisthana
This is the second lowest most chakra characterized by six petalled lotus; signifying 6 nerve endings, a Yantra constituted of crescent moon, representing the presence of water element and an animal which is a crocodile. This is the fertile ground of creativity which is the reflection of the flowing attribute of water element. This is the level where there is more freedom and the opportunity of wider range of expression; energy concerns here with the issue of the survival of species therefore it is less primitive than the fear of being annihilated. This is signifies the movement of consciousness from self protection to the protection of species. 
Swadhisthana is the centre deals with the pleasure principle. This is the centre of sensuality, desires, and sexual drives. Located between the navel and the perineum it is pre rational, subconscious plane of consciousness. In the Yantra of the chakra there are two rings of petals in which outer layer or the ring of petal signifies the conscious aspect of mind and the inner ring symbolizes the unconscious realm. In between these two yantras there is crocodile floating which depicts the subterranean movement of samskaras. The animal itself is the creature which has the field of activities both on the surface and inside the water (represents here the deeper layers of mind). It is also the emblem of the sexual or the sensuous character in the individual. Moon in the Yantra represents the main drive force of psychic life in the individual as the gravitational pull of moon affects the energy of water on the surface it also has the effects on the unconscious and the subconscious energies of the mind. It has been observed by the mental health professionals that there are effects of moon on the moods and the psychic energies of the mental patients. Therefore from the psychotherapeutic aspects of study this centre occupies an important place.
From psychoanalytic point of view this centre is also very significant. According to this school of psychotherapy sexuality (libidinal energy is the underlying force of all motivations. In yoga also the same energy is used for creative, activity of self exploration and growth of personality by sublimating the energy and expressing it through higher centers i.e. seva, brahmacharya, and tapas. Tantrik manuals talk of direct channelizing of the energy of Swadhisthana through the process of urdhareta or leading upward.  
Harmony at this chakra leads to the balanced emotional states, creativity, and ability to enjoy feelings, ability to change (quality of water), flexible thinking, high level of motivation etc.

Manipura
This is the centre of vitality, due to the fiery tejas of fire elment it is symbolizes as lustrous gem, therefore it is known as manipura (city of jewel). This is symbolized as 10 petalled blue lotus, here blue represent the most fiery/luminous part of the fire. This is the plane of self esteem, self confidence, ambition, authority and achievements; also known as power center. This is also the level where consciousness is entangled with the territory of power, achievement and ambitions.
The element of fire is the main driving force here; directs the consciousness towards more ego fulfilling activities. Therefore most of the problems related with the power and ego trips are associated with this center. Swadhisthana is center of feelings of pleasure mainly centered in ones own body or self but at this plane of consciousness one starts to direct this feeling towards others. Interpersonal relationship finds expression through this centre of consciousness. This is the centre of personal power and authority recognition. The drive for self recognition also manifests in the form of spiritual pursuits and ultimately culminates into the drive of self discovery. Concept of self identity, self discovery and self concept are dealt here. Therefore consciousness here finds the possibility to stretch power consuming plane of consciousness to the plane of self discovery that is nothing but the process to find ones identity or better to say the true identity. The plane of ego is subtler than the levels of the first two levels.

Anahata chakra
Here at this level energy takes larger patterns from the focus on ego and its desires and activities. This is a growth towards more refined form of expression. This is the seat of balance; balancing the energies of both lower and the higher realms. Consciousness moves from the personal self centered dimension to the transpersonal dimension of consciousness. So the transcendence of ego takes place here. 
Symbolically speaking this chakra is presented as 12petallled lotus. This chakra is situated between the 7 main Chakras, is also the centre of balance and harmony. Represented by a hexagon signifying the harmonious movement of consciousness and this harmony expresses itself in the form of some very refined qualities like universal unconditioned love and compassion. This plane represents the shift or a departure from instinctual realm of consciousness to more humane plane of existence. Here rationality of manipura is transcended and hence is also the centre of intuitive mind (Buddhist tantra). Even Hindu tantra studies this center as the centre of very refined feeling. Sensitivity also gets refined here to the extent that is transcends the personal boundary and one gets attuned to the feelings or suffering of others. The energies of the healer which heals others have also this chakra as the main source of healing energies. Awakening of this centre helps one to get attuned with the feelings of others. Therefore self oriented service finds expression as the selfless service (Nishkama seva). Vehicle of this centre is antelope; signifies freedom in movement of energy, heightened sensitivity, purity, alert and innocence.
This is also the centre of bliss and immense joy. Consciousness finds the source of satisfaction inside (ananda kanda). Kalpataru; wishfulfilling tree is found here. Desires are fulfilled here (transcendence of desires i.e. personal desires).  

Vishuddhi
Literally this is the centre of purification. This is the centre of activities of the most subtle tattva (Akasha). This is also the centre responsible for reception, assimilation and creative expression of information. Reflective consciousness and the heightened receptivity find expression here. Spaciousness of the ether expresses itself in the form of creativity in thinking and behavior. Thoughts or the patterns of thinking are free from the ego-constricting tendencies. Therefore here the individuals can move beyond the fixedness in thinking and enjoy freedom and spontaneity. Ether is the field medium which wires the information which is beyond the grasp of senses and the lower mind. Therefore after ‘entraining’ oneself into the vibrations of this chakra the wider range of connectivity is possible. This can happen only after purification of the self. At the subtle level there is universal connectivity, having tuned into that realm one can have uninterrupted flow of information and creativity. Synchronous mind is the example of this connectivity.

Unadulterated information (vibration) —– symbolization of patterns —– plane of concepts, ideas, established thoughts, desires ——- expressions.

Awakening of Vishuddhi refers to tuning into the field/realm of unconditioned information. The element of ether is represented by a sphere filled with the dots inside suggesting expansive nature of the element.

Ajna
Also known as guru chakra. As this is the chakra where the inner guru tattva is actualized and the command is received. This is the point of confluence of two opposite forces, causing dual experiences. This is also the realm where individuality is dropped and the individual consciousness merge into the field of eternal consciousness. The illusory field of Maya is weakened here resulting in the providence of knowledge that knows no boundaries. The third eye associated with the centre signifies the added understanding of the causal realm of existence. The lingam that is found here is Itarakhya/Itara with consolidated outline, signifying the clear perception of reality as it exists. So the distortion of reality is absent here.
Rudra granthi stands for this state of consciousness where there is shedding of individuality and attachment to life, therefore the last trace of conditioning is diluted here. Here one established the person is free from the restrictiveness of tattva, also becomes the controller of tattvas, known as the state of tattvatita. So the person, who is established here can have no compulsion, is a liberated soul. The individual directly experience the reality and the only idea that exists in relation to the reality is ‘Iam That’ (Aham Idam). Because consciousness flows in the causal realm, once being established here there is the knowledge of causality and time (

WHAT IS INTUITION?

Intuition is an inner knowing. The word intuition is derived from the Latin intueri which means to see within. Intuition is natural – everyone is born with it. It is a spiritual gift – that sometimes still, small voice of love and wisdom that guides YOU in the direction of your highest good. Intuition is your sixth sense and your most important one – It transcends your other senses and includes information from all of your senses, all you have ever learned, plus wisdom and guidance from sources you are not even be aware of.

Intuition is also an experience that almost always has a physical component to it. Sometimes intuition comes as a hunch, or a gut feeling about something. I get what I call “niggles,” little niggles that are ever so gently pulling me toward something. Niggles tend to keep coming back for awhile, while a hunch may be of the moment. Other experiences may be a tickle in your throat or some sensation in your body – an inner knowing is felt. You might also notice your energy increasing or decreasing, feel as if you are opening up or shutting down. All of these experiences are telling you something, offering wisdom and guidance in some direction.

And intuition is a skill. It is a skill in that it gets stronger the more you use it. Using intuition means listening to it and following its guidance. This next statement is important: Intuition is not supposed to be reasonable. So it’s really best to simply go with it, take some action on it without trying to figure it out. If the purpose is not immediately apparent, it will be. Developing a strong partnership between your intuition and your thinking mind will enrich your life and work beyond any current measure. When someone asked Einstein the secret to his success he said, “It is the result of intuition, an inner knowing.”

USING INTUITION IN YOUR BUSINESS

Intuition is a highly evolved business skill that can greatly assist your success. Intuition is most powerful when you first notice it – that is most often the time to take action. Fast Company Magazine has called “acting on intuition” the number one trend that will change the way we work and live.

Making decisions is one key area in which entrepreneurs can benefit from intuition. Highly successful CEOs regularly use intuition when making major decisions. Entrepreneurs and business professionals are faced with making decisions every day, often without having all the facts. Intuition accesses an infinite supply of information and wisdom. Following the guidance and wisdom of your intuition can shift you from indecisiveness, uncertainty, or worry to confidence in making decisions that will enhance the quality of your services and products, your ease of operating and your profits.

Another key area where intuition can be effectively used is in connection with prospective clients. Most of you, in retrospect, can probably identify intuitive experiences when first meeting potential clients. 1. Relax – intuition happens. Relaxation creates an ideal condition for intuition.

2. Meditate – a meditative state is a very receptive state.

3. Ask for intuitive messages at highly receptive times such as a) before going to sleep, b) before meditation and c) before journaling.

4. Spend time in nature – nature flourishes from the guidance of its own inner wisdom and primes you to tap into your own.

5. Use your imagination consciously – it has been said to be the playground for intuition.

6. Pause for regular intuitive check-ins with yourself.

7. Develop an intimate relationship with your body – intuition most always has a physical component.

8. Keep an intuition journal – keep track of your hunches, nudges and intuitive awareness; also keep track of which ones you acted on and which ones you didn’t and notice the results.

FORMULA FOR INTUITIVE SUCCESS

Decide! Expect! Trust! Act!

Make a decision to be intuitive – it’s simply choosing to use a powerful gift that you already have! Expect intuition! When you expect intuition, you can relax and let it happen, and it will. Trust your intuition, even if you don’t initially understand it. The more you trust your intuition, and that it is always in your best interest, the more it will come around. Act! Acting on your intuition is evidence of your trust. It’s your part of the relationship. Over time, it becomes second nature. And you will come to see the benefits of following the guidance and wisdom of your intuition.

To the Western person, brought up in a paradigm structured and shaped by rational thought, it really does require a huge leap of the imagination to be fully open-minded to the possibility that this phenomenon exists. It is not only a challenge to our individual sensibilities, but also to our thinking which has been shaped by the Descartes and Newton scientific heritage.

This is an immense challenge to the consensual reality in which only the material, solid, touchable, and ultimately measurable is real. The ineffable or that which can not be measured is dismissed, labelled as ‘weird’, dismissed and excluded from mainstream Western culture. Our society has always been dismissive of indigenous healing practices. This is maybe because we do not have an understanding or an explanation of the underlying principles of how this type of healing works. It is a more convenient solution to regard the activities of shamans, folk healers, and of course the ‘bare hand’ surgeons as ‘primitive superstition’.

The current scientific paradigm is quantum theory, a model that opens up a very curious universe indeed, in which nothing can actually be measured since the very action of measuring it changes its material nature and the observer is not separate to the observed.

However we look at it, this ‘thing’ does not exist in its own right. It is the choices we make and our behaviour as observers that gives it reality at all and, even then, how we look at it changes it. We need to recognise that objective reality becomes in essence a flawed concept, and that consciousness as such is an instrument in the creation of reality. So in the words Albert Einstein; “Reality is an illusion, albeit a persistent one.”

Keeping this notion in mind, if we look at the basic purpose of a ritual, ceremony, or prayer it is really to effect a change, or influence the unfolding of reality. This change is usually to improve the circumstances for a person or group of people, typically healing, drawing in benign influences and so on. To extend this, the ‘procedures’ and ‘rules’ for a ritual, in many respects are identical to the ‘rules’ of Quantum Mechanics, and that the ineffable spiritual dimension is actually a rational undertaking of our consciousness to effect the transient probability waves that generate reality in time and space.

From this perspective, what healers and shamans are doing becomes totally rational, and a ceremony or act of healing is an ‘act of intention operating at a quantum level’ , whereby this intention is an expression of our conscious desire to alter reality using the principles of Quantum Mechanics.

However the implications of this mean that shamanism and psychic surgery can be explained in terms of modern physics. Psychic Surgeons and Shamans can effect change in local reality (i.e. their clients) through what is called ‘spiritual’ power operating at the quantum level.

The process of psychic surgery is rationalized by the Former Professor of Physics and Chemistry at the University of Dortmund, Dr. Alfred Stelter He defines the process of painless, barehanded operation as thus:

“The healers form strong etheric force or energy in their hands through intense concentration. This energy penetrates matter at the cellular or even sub-atomic levels where matter and energy are interchangeable. After the accumulation of etheric forces, the magnetic cohesive energy (force that holds he cells of the bodies together) is separated through unpolarization. And then after the operation, the cells go back to their former appearance.”

Now from a personal view, I always feel, that everything which is manifested in the physical world, has a cause or source. The fact that we maybe are unable to rationally understand, define, or explain is not relevant, as the sages and wise ones say “the proof is in the eating of the pudding”, and in the ten years that I have been working and researching in the Philippines I have come to do just that. So although the Quantum Mechanics principles may satisfy our rational and logical minds, it is not that relevant. The psychic surgeons and shamans certainly do not see their work in those terms. It is always an expression of the great mystery. If we can embrace this as a mystery, it can mean that we may enter this magical world, where reality is not as solid as we think it is. Striving for rational explanations in some way keeps us outside, and prevents us from entering this mysterious world.

The ancestral traditions and the strong folk culture of the Philippines have long provided the background that has fostered a climate of general tolerance and acceptance towards traditional healers, shamans, and psychic surgeons. This tolerance also extends to Government Ministers, Presidents, and interestingly; also to the powerful Catholic Church in the Philippines. There was a very sympathetic feature article titled ‘Priest heals through power of touch’ in a recent national newspaper (the Philippine Daily Inquirer July 30th 2007 Vol 22/ No.232) about Father Fernando Saurez. One of he reasons why he has come to national prominence is that the husband of President Arroyo, was one of those healed by the priest in his celebrated “miraculous recovery” last year. Father Saurez’s healing work is all approved and praised by the church hierarchy.

Filipinos have acquired this tolerance from their old traditions that maintained an awareness and faith in the existence of nature spirits called anitos. These magical beings reside within an extended definition of the boundaries of the natural world. Although the Filipino people broadly regard themselves as rationalists (just as we do), they also as a culture are more readily to embrace the more intangible, enigmatic, and what we know as the metaphysical and shamanic dimension of reality.

This view is endorsed by research from the Asian Studies Center Organisation; “While Christianity has been the major religion in the Philippines since the beginning of the Spanish colonial period in 1565, it has always been mixed with traditional animistic beliefs and practices, giving Philippine Catholicism a particular national character. Another characteristic of religion in the Philippines, whether it is Roman Catholic, Protestant, or Islam, is that its practices openly incorporate animistic experiences and practices”.

Although there is a powerful urban desire propelled by the commercial financial interests to move into a modern ’shopping mall’ consumer society, marketed as the ‘Philippines Dream’ (part of the global consumer dream). This ‘Dream’ is really focussed on the major urban areas. The vast majority of people live in a more rural environment. There is also a vast gap in wealth between the urban middle class and those in the provincial rural areas. The people who live in the remote rural settlements and outer provinces have a closer and more intimate relationship with the natural world. In addition there is often a considerable distance from modern medical facilities, and finally there is not the money to pay for modern medical treatment and medication. This means that there is still a lot of work for the traditional healers such as the Albularyos (shamans), Herbolarios (herb doctors), and Manghihilot (traditional bonesetters).

Sylvia Browne and her admirers claim that she is predominantly successful, rather than not, in her clairvoyance while assisting on police cases. They emphasize that she is especially successful in predicting potential events likely to occur in someone’s life.

Regrettably for Sylvia Browne and her boosters, a recent high visiblility case of a missing child has again created questions about her authenticity. This is the story of the 11 year old boy who was kidnapped 4 years ago and was recently found to be alive, very near his previous home. A couple of months after the boy was kidnapped, Sylvia relayed that the child had been killed, and described the perpetrator in detail along with the location of the boy’s body. This has proven to be very inaccurate, and along side several other cases in which Sylvia has clearly been wrong in her reading of events has fueled her critics’ mudslinging. Sylvia continues publicly to champion her work.

Inspite of the ups and downs in her fifty-year career, Sylvia Browne psychic has managed to entertain, and in some capacity, to serve, admirers and supporters throughout the decades.
